Ken Whalley ARPS
With over 55 years’ photography experience, I have a vast knowledge of all areas of photography. I spent the first 30 years from the age of 14 with film and processed black & white, colour slides and colour prints which has given me a great grounding in photography.
Then, I have spent over 25 years in digital photography. I started experimenting with digital when the very first compact digital camera was released by Nikon in 1996 when I was Nikon UK’s IT Manager and have been owning and using Nikon DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras since 2004 when I finally sold my 35mm Nikon equipment. I have owned or used almost every pro and enthusiasts’ Nikon DSLR and mirrorless model since then as well as a few of their advanced amateur models, so I have a solid understanding of Nikon equipment. However, my photographic knowledge is not just Nikon as I have used many other makes as well. I can also offer advice on all other manufactures’ equipment as well.
My Gear
I currently use a Nikon Z8 as my main camera which is an amazing camera. I also have a Nikon Z6II as my backup body which gets very little use these days unfortunately.
My lens lineup is almost entirely Nikon Z glass and I have many overlapping lenses from 600mm down to 14mm a mix of S-Line and Nikon Standard lenses. In addition I have the Nikon Z 1.4 and Z2.0 Teleconverters which effectively gives me 840mm or 1200mm.
My current favourite or most used lens is the Nikon 28-400mm as it covers almost every subject type from landscape to wildlife. It’s not an S Line and not as good as those lenses but more than good enough. Its versatility makes up for the few sort comings it has of vignetting at 400mm. On the plus side I have captured more birds and animals when I have had this lens on the camera. Usually most wildlife has gone by the time I have changed to an appropriate lens.
